Fishing Chair Report – Mid May 2026
LOCALLY
The WE Special License tags for southern reservoirs within 20 minutes, were sold out. Yours truly was in the queue, messed up for two minutes and then the quotas were filled before correcting could be completed. Such is life.
Your fishing chair plans to visit ( i.e. fish) most local reservoirs within driving distance, (two hours or less). So far, Kitsum and Rolling Hills have been visited with very meagre results. It was very, very windy and wavy. My small boat stayed on the trailer and fishing from shore was a lost cause. Not to self and others, always check wind conditions before heading out to a southern reservoir.
Next on the hit list, Twin Valley, Spruce Coulee and Traverse. The search for the ever elusive and tasty walleye will be an ongoing adventure for the summer..
I’m also a trout fisherman, but not a great fly fisherman. I try my best but don’t spend enough time at it. So, if you are a trout person perhaps you can share your experiences with all the ODFG members by contacting me. Lots of great streams and rivers around us.
PROVINCIALLY
The Fisheries Caucus Agenda Items for the April Meeting included “ simplifying sport fishing regulations” ( good luck with that, lots of stake holders, scientific biology, and politics involved.) Other files were cormorants, fish transfers, (yellow perch, golden trout}, fish stalking, family fishing events, WE harvest reporting, competitive fishing events and water control structures.
FINAL THOUGHTS
There was a great article in the latest Outdoor Canada magazine about how to take kids fishing and make it an enjoyable, unforgettable experience. Lots of practical hints.
